National Farmer’s Day: Its Need for Appreciation

Written by Amber Austen, Account Services Coordinator | October 12, 2022

Agriculture holds significance at ComGroup as one of three niches we specialize in. Our first client was an international pioneer in soybean development. In honor of National Farmer’s Day on October 12, Carson Horn, ComGroup’s public relations director and one of the agency’s agriculture experts, explained how the agriculture industry has impacted him both personally and professionally.

“Farmers represent only 2% of the total population, yet that 2% feeds the entire 100%. It is quite incredible that this relatively small community shoulders such a tremendous responsibility,” Horn said. “Anyone who has ever spent any time on a farm knows that it is neither an easy job nor an easy life. It takes steadfast commitment and a love for the lifestyle to be a farmer.”

Agriculture is also personal to Horn. He comes from a family that has farmed for many generations. He grew up on his family’s diversified operation producing wheat, cattle, corn and cotton in Yukon, Oklahoma. This influenced his involvement in student agricultural organizations throughout his youth and college career before earning a Bachelor of Science in agricultural communications.

In recent years, Horn is noticing more innovation developing in the agriculture industry than ever before. A new generation of agriculturists determined to meet rapidly growing needs of our global population drive that innovation.

“It has been a point of pride for me professionally to be a part of the ag industry’s continuing legacy of innovation, and I am grateful I am able to use my talents to give back to the agricultural community that has given me so much,” he said.

Horn remarked agriculture is an extremely unique and complex institution, and its industry is inherently scientific, technologically oriented and is deeply rooted in relationships, community and tradition.

“The intangible culture and language embedded in agriculture and our rural communities that other agencies can’t grasp, we understand because we’re a part of it,” Horn said. “We’re demonstrating that unique ability every day as more and more ag clients choose to work with us to help them share their story.”

Despite the inherent hardships farmers face, Horn said they are some of the most humble, resilient and inspiring people whose contributions often go unrecognized.

“I cannot think of a group of people, a profession or an industry more deserving of our appreciation,” Horn said.
