Podcast Housekeeping Rules
Looking to learn how to make a top-notch podcast? You’ve come to the right place! We’ve gathered key tips to help you create conversational, high-quality audio. Keep reading to learn what they are!
1. Location
Location can make or break your podcast. Studios are the best place to record podcasts, but if you don’t have access to one, try to use a secluded, private space without a heavy echo. Small spaces are optimal for reducing background noise and echoes that may clutter your audio. If you’re unable to record in a small space, you can use curtains, pillows, or even a mattress to eliminate the “far away” and echo sounds. For an at-home recording, you can even use a closet.
2. Review Podcast Flow
Familiarize yourself with the content and flow of the upcoming podcast. This will help you feel more relaxed when you’re recording and allow you to be more conversational. Make sure you provide your guest(s) with this information so they can be prepared too!
3. Disruptions & Interruptions
To avoid any interruptions, silence or turn off all phones and computer notifications before recording. If you’re in a space around other people, let them know you’re about to record and would appreciate them being careful to not disturb you.
4. Movement
Resist the urge to move around or walk in your recording space. Any ambient noise will be picked up by the microphone, making it more difficult to get clear sounding audio. Even shuffling items around your desk or clicking your mouse can have this negative effect.
5. Getting Tongue-Tied
Don’t worry if you stumble over your words! Simply take a breath and restart your statement. All audio can be easily edited to remove any mishaps that may come up.
6. Last Words
Let your guest(s) know they’ll be prompted at the end of the discussion to have the last word to conclude the podcast. Telling them in advance will help them determine what to bring up for the end as you carry out your conversation.
7. Any Questions?
Before recording, ask your guest(s) if they have any questions for you. There’s nothing worse than being in the middle of recording and watching as your guest grows hesitant because they have something on their mind they forgot to ask about. Asking for questions before recording, allows your guest(s) to get everything off their chest and release some of the pressure.
